Software Engineer II – API & Integration Engineering

We are looking for a Software Engineer II to join our engineering team, with a focus on building reliable integrations, APIs, and backend services that support scalable data, analytics, and AI-enabled capabilities.

In this role, you will design, develop, test, and maintain software components that connect internal platforms, services, data products, and customer-facing applications. You will work closely with product, data engineering, data science and architecture teams to translate business and technical requirements into secure and maintainable production-ready solutions.

This role is well suited for an engineer with strong hands-on software development experience, practical API and integration skills, strong debugging ability, and a collaborative mindset. You will contribute to engineering best practices, service reliability, automation, and continuous improvement across the software delivery lifecycle.

All staff at Mastercard are expected to demonstrate Mastercard Way cultural values every day — own it, simplify it, sense of urgency, thoughtful risk-taking, unlock potential, and be inclusive — with a relentless focus on our customers.

As a Software Engineer II, you will:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services, APIs, and integration components that support business and technology capabilities.
  • Build secure, scalable, and maintainable software solutions using modern engineering practices.
  • Develop and support RESTful APIs, service-to-service integrations, and data exchange patterns across internal platforms.
  • Collaborate with product owners, architects, software engineers, data engineers, and data scientists to translate requirements into technical solutions.
  • Participate in design discussions, code reviews, testing, and release activities to ensure high-quality software delivery.
  • Apply secure coding, logging, monitoring, and operational readiness practices throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and contribute to long-term improvements in reliability and supportability.
  • Contribute to automation, CI/CD pipelines, and engineering process improvements that reduce manual effort and improve delivery speed.
  • Follow Mastercard technology, security, privacy, and compliance standards in the design and implementation of solutions.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • 3+ years of hands-on software engineering experience building backend services, APIs, or integration solutions.
  • Strong programming experience in Java, Python, or a similar modern programming language.
  • Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs and working with service-based or microservices-style architectures.
  • Good understanding of software development lifecycle practices, including design, coding, testing, code review, CI/CD, and production support.
  • Experience with SQL and relational or analytical data stores.
  • Familiarity with Git, Unix/Linux environments, shell scripting, and automated build/deployment pipelines.
  • Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to independently investigate and resolve technical issues.
  • Understanding of secure coding practices, authentication/authorization patterns, data protection, and operational controls.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working across engineering, data science, product, and architecture teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Java/Spring Boot or similar backend application frameworks.
  • Experience with API gateways, integration platforms, event-driven patterns, messaging, or batch/streaming integration approaches.
  • Familiarity with data platforms or big data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, Hive/Impala, object storage, or related ecosystems.
  • Familiarity with frontend development using TypeScript and React, with the ability to understand UI integration points and collaborate effectively with frontend teams.
  • Exposure to AI/ML-enabled platforms, model integration patterns, or data-driven applications.
  • Experience with observability tools, logging, monitoring, alerting, and production support practices.
  • Exposure to Agile delivery methods and working in cross-functional delivery teams.
  • Ability to work across multiple priorities while maintaining a strong sense of ownership and delivery accountability.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced technology environment.
